Anambra Deputy Speaker Proposes Regulation Of Social Media Activities Amongst Youths

Deputy Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly and House of Representatives hopeful Rt. Hon. Chukwuma Pius Okoye has made a proposition for the regulation of social media activities amongst youths in the state. 


His proposition was contained in a motion calling on Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo to direct the Commissioners of Youth Development and Information to as a matter of urgent public importance collaborate with relevant agencies within the social media space to initiate promotion of sustainable and positive social media engagements amongst youths through state sponsored challenges and campaigns designed to educate young people and promote socio-cultural values amongst them. 


Okoye who explained that the import of his motion was to dissuade young people from seeking negative vices on social media platforms like Facebook and Tik Tok, stressed that such veritable online channels could be deployed for positive expeditions especially as it concerns eradicating negative influences and promoting deep-rooted socio-cultural values. 


He was therefore cognisant that the Ministries of Youth Development and Information have critical roles to play in the social reorientation as well as remodeling of mindsets of youths in the use of social media platforms for positive and more productive engagements. 


Okoye who represents Awka-South 2 state constituency noted that social media platforms such as Facebook and Tik Tok have become powerful tools of communication and influences amongst youths in the state.


 He explained that while the afore stated platforms have exposed youngsters to vices like cyber bullying, fake news and unproductive trends, they can also be harnessed to promote creativity, education on skill acquisitions, civil engagements and entrepreneurship. 


He therefore emphasized the need to redirect energy of youths towards positive values, productivity and innovation through structured and engaging digital programmes. 


The Deputy Speaker also observed that state sponsored social media challenges and campaigns can serve as a cost effective and far-reaching measures to promote social cohesion,  entrepreneurship, mental health awareness and patriotism amongst the youth population in Anambra State. 


The Deputy Speaker equally acknowledged that engaging local content creators, influencers and digital entrepreneurs; government-backed campaigns can amplify positive messages, empower young people and create opportunities for job creation in the digital economy.
