Anambra Revenue Workers Plan To Frustrate Soludo's Inauguration Over Forceful Retrenchment

RAYMOND OZOJI reports

Barely a week after workers in the state civil service had their February salaries gruesomely slashed by the state government over unnecessary absenteeism from duty, Anambra State Internal Revenue Service (AIRS) have also sacked some community revenue collectors over their inability to pass a strategic tax collection examination.

The forcefully retrenched workers who are currently plotting a peaceful protest to frustrate Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo's second term inauguration ceremony on March 17th this year, told journalists at a press conference over the weekend that the decision to sack them for failing to scale through in an examination was totally unacceptable and contrary to the new tax law which made provisions for Revenue Houses across the federation to operate autonomously especially as it concerns training and retraining of staff members without undue external interferences.

Although conveners of the press conference pleaded anonymity for fear of further victimisation, they maintained that their planned protest will take place at the famous Aroma Junction Awka which leads to Alex Ekwueme Square, venue of Governor Soludo's swearing-in ceremony.

It would be recalled that the Anambra State Internal Revenue Service (AIRS) had in an internal memo dated 18th February, 2026 ordered the retrenchment of community revenue officers and some other staff for failing to pass a strategic tax collection test.

The memo equally ordered the retrenched workers to handover all AIRS tools, Identity Cards and other materials in their possession with immediate effect as failure to comply will attract severe legal sanctions.
