Anambra Nurses, Midwives Back Soludo's Reelection

RAYMOND OZOJI reports

Anambra Nurses and Midwives have joined thousands of other citizens to endorse and to support Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo's second term reelection.

The nurses and midwives who held an endorsement rally for Governor Soludo and his Deputy Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim on Saturday 1st November in Awka, declared during the rally that it is only Professor Soludo that remembered the nurses and midwives who have been suffering and neglected by past administrations.

Speaking to newsmen, the Chairman National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives Anambra state council comrade Edith Onwuka, said they held an endorsement rally for the health-friendly governor and ambassador of nursing profession because everything the governor has done in the health sector showed that he has interest in the health of the citizens and also interested in human resources for health.

Onwuka noted that Soludo came in and started recruiting nurses and other health workers to bridge the gap of inadequate human resources in the health sector, adding that just few weeks ago, Governor Soludo approved implementation of 100% Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) for nurses and other health workers.

She said that it was as result of the foregoing that the nurses and midwives resolved unanimously to show him their support and solidarity as well as make people see and understand the transformations in the health sector, stressing that the whole essence of the rally was to sensitise people to vote massively for Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, whom she said has done so much not only in the health sector but also in other sectors.

Although Onwuka was cognisant that Governor Soludo was not the only candidate in the November 8th governorship election but she insisted that currently Prof. Soludo is the  governor that has attended to health needs in the state more than his predecessors.

Onwuka explained that CONHESS was signed in 2010 but was not implemented untill the incumbent governor came on board and approved its implementation even as she disclosed that it was just 40% until Soludo eventually made it 100% just recently.

She said about three governors had come and gone but only Soludo implemented CONHESS in his tenure.

Meanwhile Mrs. Augustina Ezeanoro who was the Head of Nursing at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital Amaku Awka, said nurses were backing and mobilising for Governor Soludo because of the attention he pays to the needs of health workers in the state.

Ezeanoro maintained that nurses were very happy with Governor Soludo and that as far as they are concerned, he is coming back for a second term in office.

Also the Commissioner of Health Dr. Ben Afam Obidike, who was at the nurse's endorsement rally, lauded the contributions of nurses to the health and well-being of the citizens, stressing that their roles can not be underestimated.

Obidike informed that the transformations in the health sector under the Soludo administration can not be overemphasized because new general hospitals are springing up, primary healthcare facilities revamped and upgraded for optimal services coupled with massive recruitments in the state health sector, adding that health workers are solidly behind the governor.
