RAYMOND OZOJI reports
Abba, the country home of the incumbent lawmaker representing Njikoka 2 state constituency is on fire as two presidents-general flex muscles over leadership of the community town union.
Investigations into the town union crisis revealed that the two PGs are currently enmeshed in war of attrition casting aspersions on each other and laying heavy allegations on themselves.
The power tussle between the two PGs have degenerated into full blown war such that security vehicles and other apparatus which the current town union executives are supposed to work with to forestall security breaches in Abba town have been allegedly confiscated by a rival PG and his executives thereby making Abba town susceptible to criminal insurgents.
The two warring PGs who are Mr. Alexander Ekwuagana and Dr. Roy Chinwuba have become the proverbial elephants fighting while Abba community suffers the pain.
Dr. Roy Chinwuba who spoke to this journalist exclusively about the pitiable condition of Abba town at the moment, said an election was conducted on 20th December 2025 and he was unanimously elected as the new President-General of Abba Town Union. But according to him, his predecessor has refused to handover to him and relinquish power forthwith.
Chinwuba said he wrote a petition against the outgone PG and the outgone financial secretary of the town union to the Commissioner of Police and both persons were invited by the Police but they refused to honour the invitation hence the financial secretary was arrested by the Police through the efforts of Agunechemba security operatives stationed at Abba community.
He further disclosed that the former financial secretary was arraigned in court and the case was fixed for 11th August this year, stressing that there was no illegal arrest as alleged by the former President-General.
According to him, the crisis in Abba town began in 2018 when the then town union executives were mandated to continue in office as against the constitutional rotational standards of the community.
He said thereafter the then PG resigned over mounting pressures and another set of individuals were appointed from different villages to serve as Abba town union executives in 2020 with hope that in 2023, a fresh election would be conducted as the constitution stipulated and Amabor village would produce the next PG of the town.
Chinwuba explained that when Chief Christian Nwafor and Ikechukwu Egbe kicked against the extension of the appointed officers for a fresh election to be conducted, they were both banished for being vocal against impurities in Abba community.
He therefore disclosed that the former Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs Hon. Tony Collins Nwabunwanne intervened and instructed Abba people to conduct fresh election since the constitution doesn't approve two tenures and everyone accepted the peace move brokered by the then commissioner.
He said that the deadline given by the commissioner elapsed without any indications that the town union election would be conducted hence the commissioner mandated Njikoka Local Government Chairman to constitute an electoral committee for the election to be conducted.
He stated that it was the town union election which was conducted on 28th December, 2025 that produced him as the new President-General of Abba Town Union and subsequently issued Certificate of Recognition by the Anambra State Government.
Dr. Chinwuba said soon after he was unanimously elected by Abba people to serve them in such capacity as PG, some dissident elements approached the court claiming that the state government has no rights whatsoever to conduct town union election in Abba community thereby suing the State Government, Attorney-General and the then local government commissioner respectively, adding that October 24th this year has been slated for hearing of the matter.
Dr. Chinwuba who alleged that the dissidents categorically mentioned that it is only when Abba people want to conduct elections that they will do such, stressed that the dissidents were still parading themselves as Abba town union executives rather than wait for the court to decide the matter thereby creating panic, tension and balcanising the entire community.
He said that they have setup a new security system but the operatives have no apparatus to work with because the security vehicles and other items have been confiscated by the outgone executives, emphasizing that the entire Abba town is now vulnerable to robbery attacks and other forms of criminalities.
According to him, his antagonists have sworn to make Abba town ungovernable for him unless he voluntarily resigned from office and allow them to continue in office till December this year. That for the past six months, the said dissident elements have been causing confusion and rancour in Abba town but he has been able to manage the situation as he believes that such doesn't warrant the blood of any Abba person.
Responding to the foregoing allegations and accusations, Alexander Ekwuagana, who introduced himself to this journalist as the President-General of Abba Town Union, said he would not join issues with anyone because the issue of Abba Town Union leadership is before the court, adding that it would be subjudice to begin to talk about who the authentic President-General of Abba Town Union really is. That it is left for the court to take a decision on that.
Ekwuagana stated that Abba Town Union is a registered corporate body with the Corporate Affairs Commission and that the incorporated registered trustees took the matter to the court alongside himself versus the state Attorney-General and the former local government commissioner Tony Collins Nwabunwanne.
He said when the matter came up for the first time at the court, the man who is claiming to be the President-General of Abba Town Union through his lawyer applied to be joined in the suit.
On the alleged confiscation of security vehicles and other apparatus, Ekwuagana cited section 10 of the Anambra State Homeland Security Law, saying that the Agunechemba Security in any community is not under the President-General, stressing that he could not comprehend how he confiscated what he is not in charge of; that he is only a member of the management and finance committee of the security outfit in the community which he said that the traditional ruler and other eminent personalities were equally members.
Ekwuagana maintained that Dr. Roy Chinwuba is trying to impose himself on Abba community using various departments of the Nigeria Police Anambra State Command to inflict pains on Abba people, stressing that some persons have been attacked and arrested by those he recruited as security outfit in Abba in conjunction with men of the Anti-cult.
PG Ekwuagana said that the aforementioned matter is being reviewed by the police higher authority in Anambra State because they have made a formal complaint and will also take it further to a court action.
He also alleged that his rival PG connived with the outgone local government commissioner to conduct what he saw as a kangaroo town union election in December last year even when he has a letter which conferred on him the position of the President-General till 28th December 2026.
According to him, prior to the purported election that produced his rival, series of arrests were made in Abba community through the Anti-cult squad and several Abba youths were kept in custody at the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area of the state.
He said an attempt was made to arrest him at a royal function with the traditional ruler of Abba but they didn't succeed. Instead security operatives invaded his country home at Abba in the morning of 28th December last year to arrest him but unfortunately for them, he was not at home. That the attempted arrest on him is also a subject of court litigation at the moment, adding his rival is desperate to become President-General at all costs.
Ekwuagana further disclosed that security vehicles his rival alleged were confiscated and dumped in the premises of the traditional ruler were all flagrant falsehoods because the security vehicles, according to him, were donated by private individuals when Abba town was challenged by constant abductions and kidnappings of the people.
He added that the said security vehicles were personal vehicles of some public-spirited individuals in Abba town not community vehicles, emphasizing that the community didn't buy the security vehicles in question and they are not the property of Abba community.
He was therefore of the opinion that his rival should be patient and let the court decide and determine who the authentic President-General of Abba Town Union is and desist from imposing himself on the people of Abba community.
Meanwhile the lawmaker representing Njikoka 2 state constituency in the current 8th legislature, Hon. Jude Apua, who hails from Ezi-Abba in Abba town, told this journalist that he was not aware of the town union leadership crisis in his community.
