Anambra School Two Storey Building May Collapse On Students Over Cracks

Residents of Umuoba Anam in Anambra East Local Government Area have raised concerns over the deteriorating condition of a two storey classroom block at Community Secondary School, Umuoba Anam, warning that the structure could collapse if urgent intervention is not provided.

The concerns followed an inspection of the school by the Education Committee of the Umuoba Anam Town Union, led by the President General, Uchenna Anizor, alongside the President of the Umuoba Anam Youth Forum, Onyebuchi Mmeh.

The delegation observed extensive cracks on the ageing building and appealed to the Chukwuma Soludo administration, through the Ministry of Education, to urgently rehabilitate the facility before the peak of the rainy and flood season.

The community also appealed to Tony Nwoye, Peter Aniekwe, Obi Nweke and the Chairman of Anambra East Local Government Area, Ifeanyi Chinweze, to support the rehabilitation of the school.

Mmeh urged indigenes, alumni, age grades, corporate organisations and non governmental organisations to contribute towards renovating classrooms, replacing damaged doors and windows, providing whiteboards and repairing roofs to ensure a safe learning environment for students.

A pioneer student of the school, Elias Anizor, appealed to members of the Old Students Association to mobilise support for structural reinforcement and renovation of the buildings.

A teacher, Jude Onuorah, identified inadequate science laboratories, poor computer facilities and lack of teachers’ accommodation as major challenges affecting the school. He also disclosed that laptops previously supplied to the school were lost during the 2012 flood, leaving students without the digital tools required for computer based examinations and STEM competitions.

The school’s principal, Esther Emma Nwakaeze, commended the community for drawing attention to the deteriorating infrastructure and appealed to government, philanthropists and development partners to intervene before the building poses a greater risk to students and staff.
