RAYMOND OZOJI reports
The Chairman and Mayor of Anambra-East Local Government Area of Anambra State, Hon. Sir Ifeanyi Chinweze has assured Umuoba-Anam community of government response to the failing two storey classroom building at Community Secondary School Umuoba-Anam.
Chinweze in an exclusive interview with this journalist at the weekend, stated that government has taken note of the dilapidating classroom structure and will respond to it with lasting remedial actions to forestall any catastrophe that may arise in the future.
Chinweze who urged the Parents-Teachers Association (PTA), Community Town Unions, Community Opinion Leaders, Legislators at the federal and state levels to take ownership of state government projects and programmes in their respective communities, stressed that government can not be everywhere at the same time hence stakeholders have critical roles to play to ensure that projects sited in their domains are maintained and sustained for the betterment of all and sundry.
He also pointed out that communities could assist government through the Public Private Community Partnership (PPCP) model to provide infrastructures such as classrooms, healthcare centres and a host of other amenities accessible to those in the hinterlands.
According to him, Awkuzu, Enugwu-Otu, Eziagulu-Otu and some other communities have replicated the PPCP model where stakeholders in partnership with government provided social amenities beneficial to the people.
The Mayor noted that the age-grade in Eziagulu-Otu community built a school while a club association built health centre in Enugwu-Otu community, all of Anambra-East council area. He also added that Awkuzu people in Oyi Local Government Area built a hospital in their community for the rural populace to access healthcare services, stressing that they didn't wait for government to do it for them.
Chinweze was therefore of the opinion that Community Secondary School Umuoba-Anam would receive government attention but urged stakeholders in the community to be first responders to the situation as he believes that sustainable development is a collective responsibility.
