Chairman of Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, Hon. Dr. Emmanuel Ikechukwu Nweke, says it is only Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo that has conducted local government elections twice since the state was created more than three decades ago.
Nweke who spoke exclusively to this journalist in his office at the council headquarters Nteje on the conduct of the just concluded LG Polls in Oyi council area, noted that Governor Soludo has fulfilled his electoral promises to Ndi-Anambra especially as it concerns conduct of local government elections to ensure that the dividends of democracy got to the grassroots.
Nweke stated that Governor Soludo should be commended for providing the grounds for democracy to thrive at the grassroots level, stressing that the August 29th Local Government Polls was the second time the governor held local government elections in his tenure.
He therefore maintained that no other governor before him was able to achieve it, adding that the 2013 local government polls was done in the twilight of the said regime. Nweke said Soludo promised to conduct LG Elections and has done so in August 2024 and August 2026 respectively.
Nweke who noted that governance was more important at the local government level, said it was so because it is where the people access and assess their leaders, pointing out that he lived in the hinterlands for the four years he served as Oyi Local Government Chairman and never traveled out of the council area for one day.
He thanked Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo and the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) for conducting what he described as a credible and acceptable election in the state for the second time.
Although he said that the opposition had conceded defeat even before the election, he was of the opinion that the massive turnout of voters in Oyi Local Government Area reflected the confidence reposed in the APGA government by the people.
According to him, the August 29th 2026 Local Government Elections in Anambra State was a testament to what will happen in next year's general elections. He said that the election went well in Oyi and that the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) swept the polls landslide; showing the acceptability of APGA and her candidates.
Nweke noted that the opposition in Oyi Local Government Area did not field candidates because they knew APGA had better candidates for the election, adding that the process was peaceful and devoid of violence.
