The Anambra State Road Traffic Management Agency (ARTMA) has ended decades of traffic congestions at the popular Regina Junction in the state capital Awka.
Regina Junction which is along Enugu-Onitsha federal highway in Awka, is often busy with pedestrian traffic, commercial buses, tricycle operators and other road users especially commercial vehicles stopping, waiting, loading and offloading indiscriminately along the expressway which often times resulted in accidents that have claimed human lives.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the state traffic management agency, Hon. Engr. Okonkwo Emeka Konti, in a statement maintained that government deemed it necessary to end the insanity at Regina Junction Awka because of the catastrophic consequences such insanity posed to the lives of the citizens.
He said, " Effective immediately, commercial vehicles areprohibited from waiting, stopping, loading or offloading passengers around Regina Junction on the Awka–Enugu lane.
The designated stopping point has been moved about 100 metres away from the junction, immediately after Access Bank.
For years, commercial buses have formed multiple queues around the junction, making it extremely difficult and dangerous for motorists coming from the intersecting roads to safely join the expressway.
As a result, motorists are often forced to join the expressway through the speed lane instead of the service lane, contributing to serious accidents and loss of lives.
Passengers should please cooperate, walk the short distance up the road to board your bus at the new designated point as we collaborate with relevant ministries and agencies to get a permanent bus terminal on that route."
ARTMA also stressed the need for motorists to understand that road markings are not just lines painted on the road. That they are important safety guides that help every road user understand how to drive, where to stop, and how to share the road responsibly.
The agency noted that understanding and obeying road markings reduced confusion, prevents crashes and helps create safer roads for everyone.
