The Anambra State Chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives ( NANNM) has condemned in very strong terms the recent attack on the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH) Amaku, Awka.
The union categorically stated that it was absolutely wrong for any person to describe the state teaching hospital as a place where people go and die because it is bereft of the requisite facilities and equipment to respond to emergencies and to save lives.
The Anambra NANNM chairperson, Mrs. Edith Onwuka, who presented the position of the union on the destructive statements credited to an individual in a podcast against the hospital, told this journalist in an exclusive interview that the destructive attributions made against the state teaching hospital doesn't reflect the current status of the facility.
Onwuka stated that the union's assessment of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH) is that there is much improvements in the hospital now as against what it used to be in the past.
Onwuka who emphasized that everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, maintained that her own relative has been successfully treated at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH) Amaku Awka and discharged.
She noted that COOUTH being an emerging hospital is trying its best to meet the medical and health needs of Ndi-Anambra and that Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo is also making commendable efforts in the health sector as evident in the new Trauma Centre and other sections at the state teaching hospital, adding that the facilities and equipment are curtain-edge.
She therefore applauded the Commissioner for Health Dr. Ben Afam Obidike for always being responsive to the needs of COOUTH to ensure that it continues to provide comprehensive healthcare services to the people.
Onwuka however advised detractors to allow the Chief Medical Director of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH) Amaku, Awka to function effectively as she believes that the CMD has a lot to offer to further improve the standard of the hospital even as she described the state teaching hospital as a work in progress.
The Anambra nurses' chairperson equally commended Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo for his administration's investments in the health sector; noting that his administration has periodically recruited highly experienced health professionals to close human resources gaps as well as renovated and equipped over 200 primary healthcare facilities with solar electricity systems and other paraphernalia coupled with innovations like telemedicine which she said guaranteed uninterrupted services in the PHCs.
Onwuka who acknowledged that Anambra State has won awards for outstanding performances in primary healthcare delivery, also noted that Governor Soludo has built general hospitals; equipped them and posted health workers to the new facilities for prompt service delivery.
