Police Confirms Increase In Cult Killings, Drug Abuse, Hooliganism In Anambra

RAYMOND OZOJI reports

The Anambra State Police Command has raised concerns over what it saw as increase in cult clashes, drug abuse and hooliganism amongst youths aged between 18 and 26 years old.

The command spokesman SP Ikenga Tochukwu Anthony who briefed journalists on the development, said the command has redoubled its efforts to addressing the resurgence of cult related activities, illicit drug peddling and negative peer group influences, noting that the command's operatives are working assiduously to stem the tide.

Ikenga stated that the suspects in their custody were arrested in connection with hooliganism, cultism as well as drug related cases and that all the suspects would be charged to court at the appropriate time. He equally emphasized that it was as a result of the massive raid the command conducted in identified black spots that they were able to apprehend the suspects.

Ikenga disclosed that from the interrogation of the suspect in possession of Indian Hemp, he confessed that the smallest pack is sold for N3000 while the value of the drug in his possession is estimated at N10 Million, stressing that the drugs would be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for necessary actions.

He said, " We have noticed recent insurgence of cult killings in the state. It is in that regard that our operatives have stepped up our surveillance and patrols. We have a lot of suspects in custody. We have coordinated raids going on now and this brought about the suspects we have in custody.

Our operatives recovered large quantity of drugs and arrested 54 suspects which are 39 males and 15 females in separate raid operations conducted by the Special Anti-cultism Squad Enugwu-Ukwu Njikoka Local Government Area of the state. "

He said that the police expressed deep concern over increased cases of moral decadence in the society particularly amongst youths and what the command has observed is that persons who committed crimes related to cultism, drug abuse and bad group companies were amongst the aforementioned age bracket.
