Anambra Primary Healthcare Centres Not Monuments Of Death -- Commissioner

RAYMOND OZOJI reports

The Commissioner for Health in Anambra State Dr. Ben Afam Obidike has responded to the claim by the All Progressives Congress (APC) that Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) in the state are not hospitals but monuments of deaths.

Obidike who spoke to this journalist exclusively, said that the state government has renovated and refurbished virtually all the PHCs in the state and they are all functional, pointing out that the claim by APC was mere campaign propaganda because the state is in an election year.

Obidike stated that the transformations in the health sector under Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo can not be overemphasized because primary healthcare centres in the state won the best performing health facilities in the country as adjudged by independent assessors.

The Commissioner stated that Governor Soludo has built five new general hospitals in Anambra-North senatorial district located at Okpoko Ogbaru Local Government Area, Enugwu-Otu Aguleri Anambra-East Local Government Area and some other locations in the senatorial district in order to create access to comprehensive healthcare services in the hinterlands.

He explained that prior to the establishment of the Solution General Hospital at Enugwu-Otu Aguleri community, anyone who fell sick in the area had to endure a two-hour boat journey just to get to the nearest hospital but Governor Soludo, he said has changed the story because people can now access medical care without stress.

He also added that the governor has ensured that hospitals in the state are functional as evident in the recruitment of human resource for health as well as provision of medical equipment for the hospitals to ensure optimum services in the facilities.
