RAYMOND OZOJI reports

The Chairman Idemili-South Local Government Area of Anambra State, Dr. Mrs. Amaka Obi has rescued pupils of Central Primary School Nnobi from dilapidated classrooms.

The school located at Umuegbu village Ngo in Nnobi community Idemili-South Local Government Area received attention of the Council Chairman, when the Councilor representing Nnobi ward 2  Hon. Oluchukwu Ilogbenu, narrated ordeals of the primary school pupils whom he said needed urgent help from the dilapidated classroom blocks.

At the commissioning ceremony of the four classroom blocks constructed by Dr. Mrs. Amaka Obi for Nnobi Central Primary School, she said she wasted no time in responding to the situation because she believes that the government of Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo doesn't joke with basic education.

She said her administration prioritises basic education because it is the foundation for educational development, adding that the governor's free education policy from nursery to secondary school level is indeed revolutionary.

She said that the governor has employed over eight thousand teachers and equally renovating and constructing new schools in communities where there are none in existence coupled with government's Smart School Projects which she said Idemili-South is a beneficiary even as she urged parents to take their children to government-owned public schools as she believes it is a new era in the state's education sector.

Head teacher of Central School Nnobi, Mrs. Florence Umeh JP, said she was very happy when Amaka Obi began construction of the classroom blocks. Mrs. Umeh stated that the school is in dire need of the classrooms because what they had was not conducive for the pupils.

The President-General of Nnobi community Chief Sir Alloy Olubialu who commended Amaka Obi's efforts, assured that the town union would help to ensure that there is adequate security in the school inorder to protect properties of the school from being stolen or vandalised by hoodlums.

Meanwhile the education secretary of the Anglican Communion Diocese on the Niger, Ven. Izu Ndubuisi, stressed that government returned schools to churches and it didn't abandon them to their fate instead government, according to him, has continued as well as consistently partnered the churches to ensure orderliness in the scheme of things.

Ven. Ndubuisi who applauded the four classroom blocks built by the Idemili-South council chairman, maintained that the church would continue to collaborate and support government in the area of education at all levels.

Commissioning the new classroom blocks, the Chairman Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) Dr. Vera Nwadinobi, reiterated that Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo doesn't joke with basic education which according to her was why the governor embarked on renovation of schools upon inception of office as most of the schools were completely dilapidated and unfit for learning.

The ASUBEB chair said there are over one thousand government schools in the state and because government can not shoulder the responsibility alone; the  governor delegated Local Governments to handle schools in their respective council areas, stressing that Idemili-South Mayor has replicated the governor's vision in Central Primary School Nnobi.

Nwadinobi who informed that the governor has approved fifty more schools for fifty communities where government-owned public primary schools do not exist, also stressed the urgent need for communities to take responsibility of providing security coverage in the schools to prevent hoodlums from stealing and vandalising school properties.
