RAYMOND OZOJI reports
The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives Anambra state chapter have blasted people they described as disgruntled opposition elements for peddling what they saw as fake news and negative propaganda against General Hospital Anaku that was recently inaugurated by Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo.
The association expressed deep concerns and displeasure that the opposition could play politics with the health of the citizenry by spreading false claims in the social media that the governor commissioned an empty hospital with no single patients and no medical personnel.
But speaking exclusively with this journalist, the state chairman of Nurses and Midwives, Comrade Edith Onwuka, stated without equivocation that such information were fake and lies from the pit of hell because they have embarked on a fact-finding mission to General Hospital Anaku shortly after the opposition began their pranks on the hospital and found out that there was no oita of truth in the propaganda being peddled against the newly birthed first ever health facility in Anaku and Ayamelum Local Government Area.
Onwuka said that after the alleged news of fake general hospital at Anaku Ayamelum local government area, the association's representatives went to General Hospital Anaku to find out that what the opposition did was very far from the truth.
Onwuka informed that they met their members at General Hospital Anaku, who have their practicing license and also confirmed that the hospital has been working since it was commissioned by the governor.
She said that their members also told them about the estimated number of patients they attented to on daily basis since the hospital began operations. That the association's representatives saw a woman who delivered her baby in the hospital; that the association therefore advised that people should quit playing politics with the health of citizens.
She said that from their findings, the General Hospital Anaku is fully functional and their members are there working day and night. Onwuka maintained that their members working there are not borrowed members instead they are nurses from the state civil service, General Hospital Otuocha while some others are newly recruited nurses.
The Nurses and Midwives chairman said about 20 of their members are working at the newly commissioned General Hospital Anaku ( Solution General Hospital Anaku) and they are fully licensed and registered nurses and midwives, commending Governor Soludo for taking the health of Ndi-Anambra to the next level by ensuring that there is a secondary health facility in all the local governments.
She said in the past Ayamelum local government had no general hospital and it has been a problem because what they had was a primary healthcare centre and according to her, not every health issue can be handled by a primary healthcare facility. She therefore posited that the General Hospital Anaku is a welcome development because it will henceforth serve as a referral centre for all the rural communities within the location of the hospital for cases they Ƨan not handle.
Onwuka who described Prof. Soludo as a health-friendly governor, commended him for building the Solution General Hospital Anaku for the people of Ayamelum and Ndi-Anambra at large, saying that posterity will be kind to him and that the nurses and midwives of Anambra state are solidly behind him in his second term aspiration.
Onwuka disclosed that as a union, they have unanimously resolved to support him having seen what he has done in the last three years and six months of his first term in office with the latest development being approval for implementation and payment of Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS for all their members at the state and local government levels.
Also the Deputy General Secretary of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives Anambra state council, Dr. Ikedi Onah, said over thirty patients were waiting to be attended to at the Out Patients Department (OPD) the day they visited the hospital on Tuesday 28th October, 2025 to see things for themselves.
Onah further disclosed that apart from the OPD, they toured the wards and saw about five surgical patients on admissions and equally confirmed that about twenty of their members are working in the new Solution General Hospital Anaku.
He said they went to the pharmacy department and saw a lot of drugs therein including other departments, he said are very functional even as he also pointed out that their members working at General Hospital Anaku didn't complain about anything instead they were happy working because the governor increased their pay recently.
He therefore emphasized that the sponsors of fake news and negative propaganda against a laudable effort should beware because he believes that whatever goes around, comes around and that the law of karma is natural, stressing that Governor Soludo should be commended for building the Solution General Hospital Anaku and not condemned.
