Chief Mike Ibe Okonkwo, Onyechimereze, former President-General of Odida, Nnewichi in Nnewi North LGA of Anambra State, has called for the strengthening of Igbo culture, values, and traditions.
Chief Okonkwo, who is also the Obi of Umudala-Ogbuji, Umuezikee in Nnewichi, Nnewi, made the call on Saturday during his New Yam Festival at his ancestral home.
He said the rise in societal ills today is largely attributable to the decline in the celebration of Igbo culture.
The businessman, who is also the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Ifeutor Water Bottling Company, noted with concern that the observance of Igbo culture and traditions is waning.
He said the decline can be reversed through the celebration of the New Yam Festival, age-grade activities, masquerade displays, and other cultural practices for which the Igbo are known both locally and internationally.
“All hands must be on deck to revive and sustain our cultural values, both at home and in the diaspora. It is even better when we celebrate our culture and traditions wherever business has taken us,” said Chief Okonkwo, also known as Ifeutor Anaedo.
The Obi of Umudala expressed gratitude to God for His protection and sustenance since he ascended the throne of his fathers in 2015, adding that God has been fighting his battles and granting him victory.
The event was attended by dignitaries including the State Chairman of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), Chief Moses Okeke; APGA stalwart, Hon. Chike Agwuncha; and the Chairman and Founder of Omepuruchukwu Charity Foundation, Chief Nicholas Echezona Nsoedo.
