RAYMOND OZOJI reports
The lawmaker representing Onitsha-South 1 state constituency in the 8th legislature of Anambra State and leader of the Labour Party House of Assembly caucus, Hon. Jude Ifeanyi Umennajiego, has said that the performance of the Labour Party in the November 8th governorship election was completely an abysmal failure as the party was able to garner just ten thousand votes in the contest.
Umennajiego who spoke exclusively with this journalist on the conduct of the election, stated categorically that Labour Party didn't participate in the said election due to what he mentioned as internal wranglings rocking the party.
The lawmaker who stated that the party's candidate in the just concluded governorship election ran a solo project without carrying anyone along; not even the party's state chairman in Anambra, wondered why a party which has Peter Obi, two senators, six house of reps members and seven house of assembly members was able to get only ten thousand votes which according to him, was not up to one thousand votes per local government.
The lawmaker noted that it was crystal clear that Labour Party was not in the election as a result of internal squabbles, the party's choice of candidate and other factors which militated against their chances in the election coupled with leadership crisis.
He said that it was noticeable that practically everybody stayed away from the campaigns and that the candidate wasn't carrying everybody along.
Umennajiego who also told this journalist that Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo won the November 8th governorship election fair and square, maintained that the governor worked hard for it and he won landslide, stressing that the governor deserved the people's commendations.
The lawmaker said he doesn't engage in what he described as foolish opposition and that he had to congratulate the governor because he has worked exceedingly for it and evidences abound. He added that why the citizens reelected Soludo was because he is doing well and it is expected that he would put in more efforts in delivering the dividends of democracy to Ndi-Anambra irrespective of party affiliations and political linings.
Umennajiego equally disclosed that the 8th assembly has always supported Governor Soludo which is why his bills have always scaled through during legislative proceedings, pointing out that they can not oppose him when he is delivering the dividends of democracy to the people.
