Idemili-North Ends Cultism, Brutal Killings

RAYMOND OZOJI reports

Idemili-North local government area of Anambra state has taken a decisive step to ending cult activities and incessant killings in the council area following the enactment of a by-law to stem the tide of shedding innocent blood and brutal killings.

Assenting to the law at the council headquarters Ogidi during a press conference, Idemili-North council chairman, Hon. Stanley Chigbo Nkwoka, recalled that sometime last month, there were some mass shootings in the council area and innocent lives were lost in the shootings.

Nkwoka stated that the cult war where people died was a very sad development in Idemili-North; so he convened a security meeting with stakeholders and they came up with a by-law to checkmate cultism in Idemili-North.

Nkwoka further disclosed that the aim of the by-law was not to dissuade anyone from joining cult groups or infringe on their rights of freedom of association but for the membership of the clandestine groups not to disrupt public peace and public order with their nefarious activities as evident in last month's broad daylight gun battle between cult groups which claimed some lives.

He said that Idemili-North wants peace which is why they initiated the law in line with what the state government already has in place. That the Congress of Councilors passed it into law and he has assented to it for it t to become a law in Idemili-North and operational henceforth.

The Idemili-North local government boss maintained that a body would be set up to partner the police and other security agencies in enforcing the law proscribing cult-related activities in Idemili-North, adding that citizens would live freely and happier, if there is less cult-killings in the council area.

Nkwoka who described the law as a symbolic law in Idemili-North, expressed optimism that it would help to curb cultism, land-grabbing, touting and all manner of insecurity in Idemili-North local government area.

He therefore called on the youths to be vigilant, protect their communities, their wards and polling units and also report any troublemaker within their respective localities to the council authority because the council, according to him, has the security architecture to intervene.

He said nobody should be afraid to report or say something about suspected situations because he is in-charge of Idemili-North as the chief security officer at the moment and his administration would not condone any form of intimidations or threats to lives under his watch.
