Onitsha-North Local Government Area has condemned in totality hasty renaming of Limca Road Onitsha to Ichie Emeka Anyaoku Road by the Idemili-North Local Government Authority.
An official statement cum public notice signed by Onitsha-North council boss Hon. Tony Nweze-Nwora described the decision and action of Idemili-North chairman as illegal because the Limca Road in question is within the country home of the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe in Onitsha-North council area and has absolutely no connection with Idemili-North Local Government Area.
The statement also disclosed that Idemili-North Mayor overstepped his boundaries and territorial powers by encroaching into a road that is located in Onitsha-North and renaming same thereby undermining the territorial integrity of Onitsha-North people tantamount to boundary crisis.
It would be recalled that Idemili-North council chairman had on Wednesday 18th March this year renamed Limca Road which stretches from Nkpor junction to Boromeo Roundabout Onitsha to Ichie Emeka Anyaoku Road, a decision taken to immortalise the former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.
But Onitsha-North council authority has made it categorically clear that the said road remained Limca Road and not Emeka Anyaoku Road; that any action on the contrary by Idemili-North Local Government Authority would meet severe legal consequences.
The statement reads in parts: " The entirety of Limca Road from Zik's country home through Boromeo Hospital up to Nkpor junction, lies squarely within the territorial jurisdiction of Onitsha-North Local Government Area. At no time has this road fallen under the administrative control of Idemili-North Local Government.
The purported renaming of Limca Road by Idemili-North Local Government is ultra vires, illegal, null and void ab initio.
The said road remains Limca Road (Old Enugu-Onitsha Road) until any lawful remaining is carried out by the competent authority.
The general public, ministries, departments and agencies, security agencies, map publishers, logistics companies and all relevant bodies are hereby put on notice to disregard the said unauthorized name. "
