Anambra Government To Ban Youth Leaders Above 35 Years Of Age

RAYMOND OZOJI reports

The Government of Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has announced ban on all youth leaders above 35 years old.

A press statement signed by the Special Adviser to Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo on Youth Reformation, Dr. Nelson Obinna Omenugha, explained that the ban was not intended to witch-hunt young people or stop them from occupying leadership positions but to ensure that the right things were done to give younger persons opportunity to occupy such offices.

The statement reads, " The Anambra State Government has reaffirmed that the 18-35-year age bracket will be strictly enforced across youth development programmes, youth organisations, and leadership structures designated for young people, effective January 1, 2027.

The policy seeks to ensure that youth-focused opportunities reach their intended beneficiaries, promote fairness, strengthen participation, and create space for emerging leaders to develop their leadership capacity.

All youth organisations, associations, and relevant institutions are directed to review and regularise their membership, leadership structures, and operational guidelines to ensure full compliance by the deadline.

From January 1, 2027, the Ministry of Youth Development and relevant government agencies will not recognise youth organisations that fail to comply with the stipulated age bracket.

The directive aligns with the youth reformation agenda of the administration of His Excellency, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, which seeks to build a disciplined, productive, responsible, and values-driven generation of young people.

While recognising the importance of mentorship and intergenerational collaboration, the government emphasises that positions and opportunities specifically reserved for youths must be occupied by eligible persons within the prescribed age bracket.

The policy is not intended to exclude citizens above 35 from contributing to youth development. Rather, it protects opportunities for eligible young people while encouraging experienced citizens to provide mentorship, guidance, and support.

All stakeholders are urged to use the transition period to make the necessary adjustments ahead of the January 1, 2027 deadline.

The ultimate goal is to strengthen youth participation, promote accountability, and advance the vision of a New Onye Anambra through purposeful youth reformation."
