RAYMOND OZOJI reports
Nawfia Progressive Union (NPU) in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, has debunked alleged threats of insecurity in the community as it prepares for her 2025 mass return on 26th December this year; contrary to false online reports of increased gunmen attacks in the town.
Recent online reports had alleged that the traditional ruler of the community, His Royal Highness Igwe Dr. Dan Ogochukwu Obelle, had cancelled the Igu Aro festival slated for 2nd January, 2026 over an attack on the community on 7th December this year which left about four persons dead coupled with other similar occurrences.
Reports had it that the traditional ruler and the Igwe-in-Council cancelled next year's Igu Aro festival and some other festivals to enable the community mourn their departed brothers who were murdered in cold blood as well as save the community from further loss of lives and properties while making case for the complete overhaul of the state local security outfit called Agunechemba over lack of trainings.
But the President-General of Nawfia Progressive Union (NPU) Chief Daniel Okoye, who provided further clarification, stated categorically that there is no increased gunmen attacks and no insecurity in Nawfia community because everywhere in the town, according to him, is very peaceful and everyone is in the Christmas mood.
Okoye told this journalist exclusively that there are activities lined up for the people as they join in this year's mass return, stressing that December 26 is Nawfia Day celebration which is a special occasion for Ndi-Nawfia at home and in the diaspora to be held at Nawfia town hall.
In the words of the PG, " Ndi-Nawfia, come home and celebrate our heritage. Join us for a vibrant day filled with rich cultural displays, colourful age-grade procession, electrifying entertainment and refreshing hospitality."
He explained that apart from Nawfia Day celebration on 26th December, inter-village football matches have commenced alongside other events specially designed by the town union to give Ndi-Nawfia a befitting festive season, adding that all the events will hold one after the other because Nawfia community, according to him, is peaceful and devoid of security breaches.
The PG therefore reinforced his opinion that activities heralding the Igu Aro festival were not cancelled because of insecurity rather they were put on hold because the community deemed it very necessary to honour Nawfia citizens who were killed in very cruel circumstances.
He said it is very wrong for anyone to insinuate that there is insecurity in Nawfia town because such, according to him, were blatant falsehoods intended to cause unnecessary panic in the community.
