RAYMOND OZOJI reports
Investigations into the goings on in the Anambra State House of Assembly complex Awka have revealed that the 8th legislature said to have produced over 30 laws and over 80 motions within three years of its inauguration is currently suffering what maybe described as rationalisation of electricity within the same complex.
Further investigations revealed that while the new Government House called the Light House situated in the same three arms zone with the state legislative complex, enjoyed full voltage of uninterrupted power supply coupled with solar lighting support system, the legislature contended with low currents amidst rationalisation.
This journalist gathered from inside sources of the House of Assembly that whenever plenary is in session, the office complex of the legislators would be disconnected while administrative staff suffer discomfort and low morale, thereby grossly affecting their productivity and outputs until the plenary is over and the erratic low voltage is restored.
A source specifically stated that even when the plenary is over and Honourable members returned to their respective offices, the situation remained the same because the office complex of the House of Assembly suffered low voltage supply such that the air-conditioning facilities don't operate in full capacity.
Another source held that while the leadership of the legislature is not to be blamed for the poor power supply in the House of Assembly complex as it operated with the meagre resources at its disposal, it maintained that the legislature needed constant power supply to function effectively and efficiently like the executive arm.
The source however posited that the establishment of a functional legislative service commission would greatly help to address the concerns of the legislative arm of government.
Apart from the erratic electricity supply in the state assembly complex, this journalist also gathered that no House member can claim to be adequately remunerated and that in comparison to other states of the federation, Anambra lawmakers are grossly underpaid.
Although the Speaker of the House of Assembly is said to promote welfare of the lawmakers as well as integrity of the House but sources insisted that the remuneration of the House members should be in tandem with the current economic realities in the country.
When this journalist contacted Clerk of the House in his office for further clarification on the alleged rationalisation of electricity in the House of Assembly complex, the Clerk blatantly told him that he doesn't respond to allegations.
