ARTMA To Install Barricades On Agulu Lake Road To Prevent Heavy-Duty Trucks From Causing Accidents

RAYMOND OZOJI reports

The Anambra State Road Traffic Management Agency (ARTMA) has taken a drastic measure to install barricades and speed breakers to save the lives of citizens travelling along Agulu lake hill top road in Anaocha Local Government Area of the state.

This decision is as a result of the fatal accident that occurred on the road last week Friday involving a heavy duty truck which crashed into two other vehicles resulting in multiple deaths.

ARTMA report on the fatal crash as signed by the Managing Director of the agency Hon. Emeka Okonkwo Konti, has it that the Anambra State Government has moved to ensure that people no longer lost their lives on account of reckless driving and over speeding on the ever busy dual carriage Agulu lake hill top road.

The report reads: " At about 6:25 PM on Friday, 27th February 2026, ARTMA received a distress report of a road traffic accident at Agulu Lake Hill, in Agulu. The accident involved a fully loaded truck and two commercial buses.

Preliminary findings indicate that the crash was caused by overspeeding by the truck driver while descending the Agulu Lake Hill. The driver was reportedly unaware of the terrain and lost control while navigating the slope on high speed.

The road, which was formerly a single-lane carriageway, was expanded into a dual carriageway from Amawbia to Uga under the administration of Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo CFR, Governor of Anambra State.

To prevent a recurrence of such an unfortunate incident, ARTMA visited the scene alongside representatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), including the State Sector Commander, Mrs Bridget Asekhauno.

Also present were community executives of the area and the Member representing Anaocha 1 constituency in the State House of Assembly, Hon Nkechi Ogbuefi, to deliberate and proffer lasting solutions.

After thorough assessment, the following solutions were recommended: Installation of barricades to prevent heavy-duty trucks from using the Agulu Lake Hill route. Erection of visible road signs to properly guide and warn drivers.

Installation of rumble strips and speed bumps to reduce vehicle speed while navigating the area."

Okonkwo however emphasized that ARTMA remains committed to safeguarding lives and ensuring safer roads across Anambra State.

He therefore urged all motorists to obey speed limits and remain vigilant, especially on hilly terrains.
